Bucs Fall To Second Conference Foe In Two Days

LAKELAND, Fla.—The Barry University volleyball team dropped their second-straight SSC match in a row on Saturday afternoon. The Bucs fell in straight sets to Florida Southern, 25-10, 25-13, 25-16.

Barry (9-12, 1-9 SSC) struck first in set number one with a Mariana Lisboa kill, and the teams traded points through 2-2. Florida Southern (13-10, 7-4 SSC) took five of the next seven points and a three-point lead at 7-4. The Mocs held the lead through 10-7, but went on a 15-3 run to close out the set with a 25-10 score. Southern’s Lauren Huber served the final seven service points for the win.

Tied 2-2 in the second set, Florida Southern used a three-point run to take a 5-2 lead. The Mocs doubled the Bucs up at 10-5 and outscored Barry 15-8 to take the 25-13 win in set two. The Bucs earned multi-point runs twice late in the game; scoring two in a row at 18-9 and 21-10.

A Lisboa kill started the third set, but Florida Southern soon took a 6-2 lead off a 6-1 run. Down 7-4, Barry went on a 3-0 run, with the help of a kill apiece by Taylor Zirwas, Tania Torres, and Mariona Lisboa, to go down 7-6. The Bucs stayed within a point or two through 11-9 at which point the Mocs went on a 5-0 run to take a 16-9 lead.

Facing match point at 24-13, Lanie Muys served a pair of aces and the Mocs committed two errors to give the Bucs hope down 24-16. The Mocs, however, took the final point for a 25-16 win in set three and a 3-0 win in the match.

Lisboa and Torres each finished with six kills in the match while Muys had four. Libby Walter posted a double-double with 10 kills and 10 assists.
