MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry University women’s soccer team fell at the hands of Saint Leo, in what was a hard fought match, 2-1 on Saturday night.
The Buccaneers fell behind early after Dari Alcantara was able to slip a pass just inside the six to Ari Foreman who connected for the first goal of the game just before the 4th minute mark. However, the Bucs would match the Lions offensively shot for shot, as they maintained their aggressive attack.
It was in the 25th minute that Haley Struthers would send a long pass across the field to junior Melissa Madrid, who was able to maneuver around a defender and connect on a 20 yard strike to the top right corner, knotting the score at one.
The Bucs seemed to have the momentum, but the Lions quickly answered when just four minutes later, Dari Alcantara would score, on a goal similar to Madrid’s, to put the Lions ahead by a goal.
The Buccaneers would see several missed opportunities in the second half, in which they out-shot the Lions 8-4. However, the Bucs were unable to capitalize and the Lions would hold off a late surge to win by the final score of 2-1.
The Buccaneers honored 5 seniors at half-time, playing in their final game at Buccaneer Field. The Bucs return to action next Thursday when they travel to Boca Raton to face off against rival Lynn in their season finale.
