Women's Basketball Falls To Cougars In Tip-Off Classic

DAVIE, Fla.—the Barry women’s basketball team opened the season with an 86-76 loss to the Columbus State Cougars at the NSU Tip-off Classic on Friday night at the Taft Center.

The Bucs (0-1) had a six-point lead at 16-10 with 15:05 left in the first after Alexandria Zamora sank a layup. But the Cougars responded with an 8-2 run to knot the game at 18-18 on a three-pointer by Shan Basley at 13:19.

Columbus took a 29-28 lead at 8:48 of the first half on a turn-around jumper by Carrie Washington and the never trailed. The Cougars took an eight-point lead into the break at 51-43.

In the second half, the Bucs battled back to tie it at 66-66 on a three-pointer by Yvonne Houston with 9:21 left and a pair of free throws by Colette Eule made it 69-69 with 7:32 to play. But over the next 5:42, the Cougars devised a 13-3 run, led by six points from Lauren Matheny to build a double-figure lead, 82-72.

The Bucs trimmed the lead to six, 82-76, with under a minute to play, but a miss by Houston and rebound by the Cougars closed the door.

Zamora posted a double-double in her Barry debut, scoring 20 points and grabbing 13 rebounds. Houston added 16 and Shanna Suttington had 12 points. Basley led all scorers with 27 points, while three other Cougars reached double-figures: Matheny with 12, Latiecia Davenport with 11 and Washington with 10.
