PENSACOLA, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers split a pair of games with the Valdosta State Blazers at the South Region Crossover Tournament at the UWF Softball Complex on Saturday, winning game one 1-0, but dropping the nightcap 4-2 in nine innings.
In the first game, the Bucs (1-1) got a run in the sixth inning when Alyssa Goldsmith beat out an infield hit with two outs to score Sarah Broeseker, who had doubled, from third.
Brianna Smith (1-0) made the run stand up as she scattered six hits and five walks in the complete-game shutout. She struck out five. Alanna Hadley (0-1) took the loss, despite allowing just those two hits and striking out three without a walk.
In the nightcap, the Bucs struck first on an RBI single by Broeseker which scored Kelly Martinez in the second inning. But the Blazers (1-1) knotted the game on an RBI double by Marti Littlefield in the seventh. After the teams traded runs on the tie-breaker in the eighth, Morgan Johnson launched a two-run homer in the ninth and the Bucs were unable to answer in their half.
Alexis Yohe (0-1) took the loss for the Bucs. She started and went four scoreless innings before being relieved by Paula Mackin, then came back in to pitch the final 1.2 innings. She allowed the two runs on Johnson’s homer, gave up five walks and struck out five. Courtney Gunby (1-0) went the distance, allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits and two walks and struck out three.
The Bucs face the host West Florida Argonauts in a pair of games starting at 10:00 am Eastern time on Sunday.
