MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- Barry women's tennis team labored little in an 8-1 win over Oklahoma Christian Sunday at Buccaneer Tennis Center.
The Buccaneers (13-0) won all three doubles matches -- an area coach Avi Kigel wanted to see improvement in -- to jump out to a comfortable lead entering singles play. Barry used a different lineup for the pairs matches, giving the Bucs different options as they head into the meaty portion of their schedule.
Cristina Valladares and Mona Mansour beat the NAIA No. 1-ranked doubles team in the nation, 8-4, with their win over Hermon Brhane and Lucie Sipkova at the top flight. Vojka Lukic and Julie Stas defeated Gabriella Carillo and Marta Contel, 8-3, at No. 2 pairs. Linda Fritschken and Caroline Wendling beat Andi Contantinescu and Maryfer Abreu Roman, 8-2, in the No. 3 doubles match.
No. 33 Lukic beat No. 2-ranked Brhane, 6-3, 6-0, at No. 1 singles. No. 47 Fritschken defeated No. 13 Sipkova, 6-2, 6-3. Constantinescu beat No. 48 Valladares, 6-2, 7-5, at No. 3.
At the No. 4 flight, No. 49 Wendling beat Carillo by identical 6-2 scores in straight sets. After having to wait for a court to open up, Mansour defeated Contel, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 5. In the final singles match, Krohnen beat Abreu Roman, 6-3, 6-3.
The Buccaneers will play West Florida Tuesday at Buccaneer Tennnis Center. Barry returns to Sunshine State Conference play when it meets rival Lynn on the road Saturday in Boca Raton.
