MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers tried to out-smart the rain on Friday and almost got away with it.

After sensing that bad weather in the area might affect the ability to get their softball game completed, the Bucs (35-9, 14-5 SSC) changed Friday’s single softball game to a doubleheader. The Bucs won the first game against the Lynn Fighting Knights 3-0 and led 6-0 in the hastily scheduled second game, but rain and lightning in the area halted it in the third inning.

In game one, Brianna Smith flirted with a no-hitter, retiring the first 14 Knights (2-42, 1-18 SSC) she faced before Kasey Murray singled to left with two outs in the fifth. Smith (19-5) held on for her 12th shutout of the season and third one-hitter of the season.

She also paced the Bucs offensively, going 1-for-3 with a double and knocking in two runs. She had an RBI double in the first and knocked in another run in the third with a ground ball to second. Julie Brito knocked in the other run with a single in the fifth.

Grace Collins went 2-for-4, scoring once and stealing three bases, while Alyssa Goldsmith went 1-for-4 and scored twice.

In the second game, the Bucs led 6-0 after a two-run double by Smith in the first and a grand slam by Goldsmith in the second. Alexis Yohe set the Knights down in order in the first three innings, but in the bottom of the third, lightning caused the game to be halted and further strikes knocked out the game after an hour delay. The game will be resumed at 1:00 pm on Saturday, with the final game to follow.
