MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- Barry University women's tennis team announced the signing of sophomore Isabela Miro, a transfer from Oklahoma State.
"We are very excited to have Isabela join our team," Buccaneers coach Avi Kigel said. "She played at a pretty high level against some great competition in the Big 12. She should help us out in singles and doubles."
Miro, a Curitiba, Brazil, native, spent one season in Stillwater with the Cowgirls. She was 11-5 in doubles, playing primarily at the Nos. 2 and 3 flights. Miro went 7-13 in singles at Nos. 5-6.
"I know that the team here at Barry is very strong, and I have the opportunity to continue to play tennis after college because of the school's great reputation," Miro said. "It's closer to my home in Brazil than Oklahoma State, so my parents can come visit me every two months."
Her signature win came against No. 6-ranked Texas when she and partner C.C. Sardinha defeated Elizabeth Begley and Aeriel Ellis, 8-4, to help Oklahoma State pull off a 4-3 upset on April 22. Miro and Sardinha rallied from a 4-1 deficit to beat Iowa State's Marie-Christine Chartier and Tessa Long, 8-4, in the Cowgirls' 5-2 win on March 24.
Miro beat Annemijn Koenen, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 6 singles in OSU's 6-1 win over No. 53 Missouri on March 23. She and Sardinha also paired to win their doubles match against Alex Clark and Ashleigh Chiaf, 8-5. She also had singles wins over No. 17 Texas A&M's Sheri Olivier, No. 37 Arkansas' Laurie Gingras and No. 46 Oklahoma's Nicole Long in one of two head-to-head matches during her freshman season in Stillwater.
Miro held a Women's Tennis Association doubles ranking of 547 on July 20, 2011. Her career-high singles ranking was 1,011 on July 26, 2010.
"I think I'm going to help with doubles," Miro said. "This is Miami, so I can study, play tennis and have fun. It's only my second day, and I love it. Also, I'm a good friend. I've already bonded well with my teammates."
