DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Barry University women's tennis team rolled to a 9-0 sweep over host Embry-Riddle Friday afternoon on the road.
The Buccaneers, ranked No. 5 in NCAA Division II, altered its lineup in a dominant win over the NAIA No. 2-ranked Eagles.
Akemi Maehama defeated Embry-Riddle's No. 17 nationally-ranked Kristina Marova, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 1 singles. Karina Goia beat No. 7 nationally-ranked Hui I Huang, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 2 singles. Emma Onila rolled to a 6-1, 6-1 No. 3 singles victory over Paola Montero.
At No. 4 singles, Barry's Linda Fritschken, ranked No. 19 in NCAA Division II, beat Giovanna Tomiotto, 6-1, 6-0. Elisabeth Abanda made quick work of Ana Gonzalez-Hoy, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 5. Kimmy Twelker won her first college match, disposing of Meena Bennett, 6-0, 6-0.
In doubles play, Barry's No. 1 tandem of Onila and Abanda beat No. 4-ranked Marova and Huang, 8-3. Twelker and Fritschken beat Tomiotto and Montero, 8-1, at the No. 2 flight. Goia and Maehama swept Gonzalez-Hoy and Bennett, 8-0, at No. 3 pairs.
Barry will play at Florida Southern in a return to Sunshine State Conference action Saturday in Lakeland.
