ST. LEO, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers salvaged a split in the Saturday Sunshine State Conference softball doubleheader at Saint Leo’s University Stadium. The Lions took game one 5-3, but the Bucs rallied for a 4-2 win in the nightcap.
Trailing 2-0 in the top of the seventh inning, Barry (12-7, 1-2 SSC) rallied for four runs, including a three-run double by Julie Brito that gave the Bucs the lead. Kelly Martinez added an RBI single to score Brito.
Alexis Yohe (5-3) set the Lions down in order in the bottom of the inning to complete the game and earn the win. In seven innings, she allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits and five walks and struck out five.
Ashley Ehlers (2-2) worked two-thirds of an inning and allowed three runs on three hits and a walk to get tagged with the loss.
The Bucs rallied from 2-0 down to take a 3-2 lead in game one when Brito belted her second homer of the season in the fifth inning. But Saint Leo’s Kelsey LaNeave answered with a two-run homer of her own in the sixth as the Lions prevailed 5-3.
Ehlers (2-1) earned the win with 2.1 scoreless innings of relief. She gave up a hit and a walk and struck out two. Britney Pugh (1-2) was tagged with the loss, giving up three runs (two earned) on three hits and a walk in 3.2 innings.
The Bucs go back on the road on Tuesday, Mar. 5 as they tackle the Saints of Flagler College in St. Augustine, Fla.
