MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers continued their roll with a 6-3 win over the NCAA Division I Quakers of the University of Pennsylvania at the Buccaneer Tennis Center on Wednesday.
The Division II fourth-ranked Bucs weathered a strong challenge from the Quakers (6-3). Four of the six singles went to a third set and number three doubles went to a tie-breaker, as strong winds played havoc with the tennis conditions.
The Bucs (10-0) took the top two flights in doubles. Barry’s second-ranked duo of Marco Mokrzycki and Fabian Groetsch dispatched Nikola Kocovic and Zach Katz 8-6 at the top flight. At number two, Leo Vivas and Max Wimmer stayed unbeaten with an 8-5 win over Vim De Alwis and Jeremy Court.
At the final flight, Sylvester Wee and Austin Kaplan pulled out a 9-8 (5) win over Barry’s Romain Costamagna and Ollie Lemaitre for the Quakers’ first point.
In singles, the Bucs and Quakers split a pair of straight set wins at the top and bottom. Mokrzycki, ranked seventh in D-II, made short work of Kocovic 6-2, 6-4 at number one, while Penn’s De Alwis beat Eduardo Alfonso 7-6, 7-5 at number six.
The other four flights all went to third sets, with the Bucs winning three. Wimmer knocked off Court 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 at number two. At four, Renato Lombardi beat Katz 6-1, 5-7, 6-4, while Vivas won at five 7-6 (4), 1-6, 7-5 over Blaine Willenborg. Penn’s Ishmael Lahlou rallied to beat 16th-ranked Groestch 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 at number three.
The Bucs face another Division I foe on Friday as the Georgetown Hoyas visit the Buccaneer Tennis Center at 10:00 am.
