Baseball Takes Series With Sweep Of Rollins

WINTER PARK, Fla. – After dropping a heart breaker in the series opener Friday night Barry University’s baseball team swept a pair of wins Saturday against Rollins College winning the first game 5-2 and the rubber match 5-3.

Game One

Barry (23-15, 9-9 SSC) fell behind early in game one as the Tars pushed across a pair of runs against Tyler Kinley in the bottom of the first inning to grab the early lead. After surrendering the early lead, Kinley buckled down and shut the Rollins offense down.

Kinley retired 15 consecutive batters at one point from the end of the first inning through the sixth inning until he walked Brian Lattanzi in the sixth.

Rollins (18-15, 5-7) managed just two runs on four hits but led 2-1 heading into the eighth inning.

Offensively the Bucs struggled to produce runs, scoring once in the fourth on an RBI single off the bat of Mike Diaz to cut the deficit to just one run.

In the eighth inning the first two Buccaneers were retired on what appeared to be a quick inning for the Tars. However, Diaz once again battled to keep the inning alive with a single through the right side that set the stage for Zac Burger. Facing a full count and two outs, Burger drilled the next pitch over the right field wall to give the Bucs the 3-2 lead.

In the ninth, the Bucs capitalized on Rollins’ defensive errors to add a pair of insurance runs and Tyler Petsch closed out the win for his fourth save of the season.

J.C. Cardenas and Diaz led the Bucs offensively with two hits each.

Tyler Kinley (4-2) allowed just two runs in eight innings, scattered just four hits and struck out two to earn the win.

Hitting for himself, Kinley also picked up his first career hit going 1-for-4.

Game Two

In the rubber-match the Buccaneers jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning as Kinley and Luis Arrizurieta led the way with RBI singles in the frame.

Rollins cut into the lead with a run in the third inning and another in the fourth but Cardenas delivered a double to deep left with the bases loaded to drive in a pair of runs once again extending the Buccaneer lead to 5-2.

Calvin Rayburn (6-2) struck out seven in 5.2 innings, allowing just three runs (2 earned).

Tyler Petsch tossed 1.1 innings to pick up his second save of the day and his fifth overall this season.

Offensively, Arrizurieta, English, Kellmann, Michael Slabach and Kinley each added a pair of hits in the win.

Barry returns to Miami Shores where they’ll host Florida Memorial Tuesday night. Live-stat and video coverage will be available through the Barry University athletics website, GOBARRYBUCS.COM.
