MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers dropped their first game of the season 3-2 in overtime to the fifth-ranked Tampa Spartans at Buccaneer Field on Wednesday night.
Less than three minutes into the overtime period, Tampa CiCi Gonzalez broke free in the middle of the field and ripped a shot at Buccaneer keeper Becca Rogers. Rogers stopped the hot shot, but could on corral it and Jenny Karl stepped up to tap in the rebound.
The Bucs (4-1-0) came out firing and got on the board early when Lauren Manna stole the ball from Tampa defender Shannon Wallish and beat Alyson Gregorowicz in goal in the fourth minute.
The goal stood up until the 58the minute. The Spartans won a corner and Gonzalez flicked the service from Jess Frank past Rogers.
The Spartans (6-0-0) took the lead in the 72nd minute. Emily Jones slipped a pass through the middle of the Bucs’ defense to Gabby Russo who converted one-on-one with Rogers.
In the 83rd minute, the Bucs evened the game on a similar play when Manna fed Dominique Richardson for the goal.
The Bucs out-shot the Spartans 13-10, including 7-4 on goal, but came up just short. Gregorowicz, playing in place of injured starter Kori Butterfield, made five saves for the Spartans. Rogers had one save for the Bucs.
The Bucs travel to Florida Tech in Melbourne, Fla., on Saturday to face the Panthers at Stottler Field. Game time is 3:30 pm.
