Men's Tennis Rolls into Varner Invitational Semifinals

WINTER PARK, Fla. -- Five Barry men's tennis players moved on to the semifinals of the Varner Invitational hosted by Rollins College Friday.

Kevin Sielmann and Fabian Groetsch each advanced to the semifinals of the Flight A bracket, while Ahmed Triki and Eduardo Alfonzo advanced in Flight B. Nico Dreer moved on in Flight C.

Sielmann and Groetsch will play each other in Saturday's 10:30 a.m. semifinals. Sielmann outlasted Florida Southern's Emmanuel Lueber, 2-6, 6-2. 14-12, in the quarterfinals. Groetsch coasted to a 6-2, 6-2 win over Lynn's Pavel Mohja.

Triki beat Carl Lundberg of Florida Southern, 6-0, 7-5, for his first win as a Buccaneer. Eduardo Alfonzo beat Rollins' Adrian DiFelice, 7-6, 6-2.

Dreer was a 6-1, 6-3 winner over Bethune-Cookman's Grace Almeida after surviving a three-set match in his first appearance as a Buccaneer.

Leo Vivas was a 6-3, 6-4 winner over Flagler's Fabio Ferranti in the Flight A consolation. Franco Echenique won his consolation match in Flight B over Bethune-Cookman's Santiago Lobelo.

In doubles play, Vivas and Romain Costamagna defeated DiFelice and Ari Davis of Rollins, 8-6.
