Volleyball Goes Distance with Eckerd Before Falling

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Barry University's volleyball team had a three-match road win streak snapped Friday when the Buccaneers dropped a seesaw affair at Eckerd, 24-26, 25-9, 20-25, 25-20, 15-10.

The Buccaneers (11-15, 4-10 Sunshine State Conference) hit .102, putting away 48 balls while committing 31 errors in 167 attacks. The Tritons (18-9, 9-5) hit .213, delivering 58 kills to offset 24 errors in 160 attack attempts. The Tritons hit .351 in the second set, while the Bucs struggled to -.108. Barry outhit Eckerd, .216 to .158 in the first set and .186 to .056 in the third. But the Tritons had attack rates of .250 or better over the final two sets, while the Buccaneers did not exceed .148 over the final two sets.

Ashley Carrero had 13 kills and 13 digs, and Tashalyn Begon had a season-high 13 kills and four aces, while picking up nine digs and recording two block assists for the Buccaneers, who will host their final two matches next Friday and Saturday at Health & Sports Center.

Jayla Trombley had 11 kills, 10 digs and two aces, and Jenny Trinidad had 39 assists and 13 digs for Barry, which was outblocked 16-5.

No player on the Bucs roster hit over .186. Eckerd had four players that hit .200 or better. Lindsay Biggs had 17 kills, 12 digs and two blocks for the Tritons. Ali McAlvany had 15 kills and 16 digs. Madison Burr finished with 41 assists.

Both teams served up eight aces.

Barry libero Jasmine Serna had 20 of the Bucs' 66 digs. 

The Bucs will honor Carrero on Senior Day Saturday in the 4 p.m. season finale.
