MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers dropped their Sunshine State Conference women’s basketball opener to the Tampa Spartans 69-53 in the Health & Sports Center on Saturday.

The Bucs (3-3, 0-1 SSC) fell behind early and never led in the contest. The Spartans (5-2, 1-0 SSC) pushed the lead to 19 points, 36-17, at the break.

In the second half, Tampa extended the lead to as many as 24, going up 58-36 on a Taylor McVey jumper at the 13:23 mark. Barry cut into the lead, trimming in to 16 on Ines Kerin’s three-pointer at 3:46, but could get no closer.

McVey led the Spartans with 18 points and 15 rebounds, while Keke Jones added 14 points. Tyler Hardy led the Bucs again with another double-double. She scored a career-high 26 points and added 14 rebounds. She was the only Buccaneer in double figures.

The Bucs are now off until playing Shaw and Benedict in the Cruzin’ Classic at Nova Southeastern on Dec. 16-17.
