MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – Barry University men’s basketball team hosts No. 6 Florida Southern at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The game will be streamed on the Buccaneer Broadcasting Network. LIVE STATS are also available. The men’s game will follow the women’s game at 5:30 p.m.

The Buccaneers (14-4, 5-4 Sunshine State Conference) are in a three-way tie for second in the league. Florida Southern (19-1, 8-1) owns a three-game lead over Barry, Nova Southeastern and Tampa at the top of the standings. Seven teams in the SSC are separated by a game.

In the first meeting of the season, Barry lost 95-79 to the Moccasins in Lakeland on Jan. 4. The Bucs led by eight with 12:03 to play in the first half before the then-No. 4 Mocs came back to win. It was the Buccaneers’ first loss of the season after winning nine straight to open the year.

“They play extremely fast, and they force you into making mistakes, so we’ve got to stay with the game plan and don’t play their game,” senior forward Magne Fivelstad said. “We know if we have a good day we can compete with them. We just have to play our basketball for 40 minutes.”

Wednesday will mark the third time Barry will be meeting a ranked opponent. The Bucs are 1-1 against ranked teams this year, having beaten No. 13 Livingstone before Christmas in the Lynn Holiday Classic. Barry climbed to No. 25 in the National Basketball Coaches Association Division II poll entering the first meeting with Florida Southern. The Bucs received one vote in this week’s poll after collecting 12 last week.

Barry had won four in a row before losing, 68-67, at Tampa Saturday. Florida Southern suffered its first loss, an 82-76 setback at Rollins, last week before beating Nova Southeastern at home Saturday.

Kevin Capers leads the Mocs in scoring (19.3) while averaging four assists per game. Dominic Lane is averaging 14.1 points and 5.3 rebounds, but is not expected to play. Stephen Battle is third on the team in scoring (10.2), and Tyler Kelly is the team’s leader in assists (4.2). Kelly, Lamar McKnight and Frank Adams are each averaging over nine points per game.

The Mocs are pulling down 40.3 rebounds per game. Barry, which lost the rebound battle in Lakeland, 46-36, is averaging 39.6 boards per game. Barry’s Yunio Barrueta (8.7) and Fivelstad (7.8) are among the top five in the SSC in rebounding, while Savad Garner (7.3) is seventh.

“It’s my last year, my last chance to win something here, so I want to make the most of it,” said Fivelstad, who’s scoring 10.9 points, while shooting 54.5 percent from the floor and 82.7 percent from the free throw line.

Freshman Arie Williams has boosted his scoring average to 6.2 points per game while shooting 43.9 percent from 3-point range. He’s been a linchpin to the Buccaneers success in the second part of the season.

“He’s given us another scorer,” Fivelstad said. “You can never have enough scorers. He’s playing with a lot of confidence. He’s just going to keep getting better and better.”

Barry has held its past six opponents to an average of 71.5 points. The Bucs held three of those teams under 70. Florida Southern is scoring a league-best 89.7 points per game.

“We just have to have a good practice today,” Fivelstad said about a half hour before Tuesday’s team workout, “and be prepared for tomorrow.”
