DAVIE, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers dropped both ends of a Sunshine State Conference softball doubleheader to the Nova Southeastern Sharks on Wednesday at the AD Griffin Sports Complex, losing the first game 4-0 and nightcap 2-1.

FIRST GAME

The Sharks (17-14, 5-4 SSC) scored three times in the first inning off starter Camille Czarnecki (7-3). With two outs, Erica Garcia walked and Katie Ammons followed with an RBI double. Rebecca Thornton singled home Ammons and came around on an error by the Bucs (19-13, 4-8 SSC).

NSU added another run in the second as Garcia lifted a fly ball to score Lorena Spaulding who had reached on another error.

That would be all the runs that Thornton (6-4) would need as she shutout the Bucs on six hits and a walk. She struck out four. Czarnecki took the loss, allowing four runs (two earned) on three hits and two walks in an inning-plus of work. Taylor Sabol tossed five scoreless innings for Barry, allowing just four hits, but the Bucs could not crack the scoring column.

SECOND GAME

In the second game, Dakota Villella scored in the second inning for the Sharks, reaching on an error and scoring on a passed ball. Melanie Spicola scored on an error on the fifth inning after reaching on a walk.

Garcia (6-4) made the runs stand up for NSU, holding the Bucs in check until the sixth inning. In the sixth, Kelly Martinez walked and Megan Copeland had a single to left. After they moved up on a  bunt by Hunter Mars, Julie Brito ripped an RBI single to right, but Copeland was thrown out at the plate by Spicola.

Britney Pugh (6-4) took the loss in a complete-game effort for the Bucs, despite not allowing an earned run. She held the Sharks to just two hits, though she walked five, and struck out four. Garcia gave up just four hits and a walk and collected two strike outs.

The Bucs are off for the next eight days before hosting the Lynn Knights in a conference set on Friday-Saturday, Apr. 4-5.
