MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers split their softball doubleheader with the St. Thomas Bobcats on Wednesday evening, losing 6-1 in the first game, but bouncing back to take the nightcap 5-3.

FIRST GAME

Barry (25-19) scored first in the fifth inning, the Bobcats responded with three runs each in the sixth and seventh innings to win game one.

Kristina Pazienza walked with two outs in the fifth for the Bucs and Alexis Kent doubled to left center and Pazienza scored all the way from first.

But in the sixth, Amanda Penton led off with a double and Jessica Matias bounced a single up the middle to tie the game. Danielle Borelli followed one out later with a double down the left field line to give the Bobcats (23-21) the lead. Borelli scored on a single by Natalie Sacramento.

The Bobcats added three more runs in the seventh, as Matias had a two-run single.

Christina Sacramento (9-7) worked a complete game for the win for St. Thomas. She held the Bucs to a run on two hits and a walk and struck out six. Camille Czarnecki (9-5) took the loss for Barry. She allowed six runs (five earned) on nine hits and two walks.

SECOND GAME

In the second game, the Bucs struck early off Bobcat starter Carson Catasus (2-6). Kayla led off the first with a bunt single and promptly stole second. After a sacrifice, Kelly Martinez singled up the middle for a 1-0 lead. Martinez later scored on an error by Borelli as she threw it away trying to pick off Julie Brito at first.

In the third, Martinez doubled and stole third. Czarnecki doubled to right to drive her in and make it 3-0.

In the fourth with two outs, Martinez doubled again and Brito followed with an RBI single. Brito advanced on the throw and scored on a single by Czarnecki.

In the fifth, the wheels threatened to come off for the Bucs as the Bobcats scored three unearned runs. Christina Horton had a two-run single and Borelli also knocked in a run.

After the Bobcats put two runners on in the seventh on an error and a single by Danielle Prieto, Czarnecki came in to relieve starter Britney Pugh (8-6). She got Catasus to ground into a fielder’s choice and Penton to pop up to short. With runners at first and second and two outs, Kent picked Catasus off at first to end the game.

Pugh got the win for the Bucs, pitching six innings without allowing an earned run. She held the Bobcats to six hits and didn’t walk a batter. Czarnecki got the last three outs for her first save. Catasus (2-6) was tagged with the loss. In six innings, she allowed five runs (four earned) on 12 hits and two walks.

The Bucs close the season with the Saint Leo Lions on Friday and Saturday in a Sunshine State Conference series.
