DADE CITY, Fla. – The Barry Buccaneers sit in third place after the first round at the NCAA Division II Women's Super Region 2 tournament hosted by Saint Leo University at Lake Jovita Golf & Country Club on Sunday.

Top-ranked Lynn leads the field after firing a 297 in the first round. Florida Tech is second at 301 while Barry, at 304 is in third. West Florida (306) and Nova Southeastern (309) round out the top five.

 Nancy Vergara, the defending NCAA national champion, leads the Bucs with a 75 on the first round and is tied for ninth. Maria Paola Fiorio and Daniela Murray are a stroke back and tied for 13th. Nicky Ferre, at 77, is tied for 19th and Martina Bertuccioli is tied for 22nd after shooting 78.

The Bucs struggled a little on the front nine, but three of the five, Vergara, Fiorio and Murray, were under par on the back nine.

Daisy-Mae Kenny of West Florida is the overall leader and the only golfer under par on the first round. She shot a two-under 70. Lynn teammates Jessica Bradley and Ellen Chambers are tied for second at 72.

The tournament continues tomorrow and concludes on Tuesday. The top three teams, along with the top three individuals not with a team, advance to the national championships held May 14-17, at Rock Barn Golf & Spa in Conover, N.C.
