Barry University men’s basketball team moved up to No. 12 in the National Association of Basketball Coaches poll and No. 14 in the NCAA Division II Sports Information Directors of America media poll, both released Tuesday.
This marks the highest rankings ever for the Buccaneers in men’s basketball in any poll. Barry’s highest ranking prior to this season was No. 16 in the NABC poll on Nov. 30, 2004.
“It’s a great honor to continue the tradition that started many years ago here at Barry,” Bucs second-year coach Butch Estes said. “I’m very proud of our players and our coaches for their dedication and hard work, and I challenge them to accept the responsibility that goes along with being a ranked team.”
West Liberty (W. Va.) remained No. 1 in the NABC poll, followed by Southern Connecticut State, Bellarmine (Ky.), Florida Southern and Indiana (Pa.).
The media poll’s top five is West Liberty, Southern Connecticut State, Florida Southern, Bellarmine and Central Missouri.
Barry will host Saint Leo 4 p.m. Saturday in the Sunshine State Conference opener at the Health & Sports Center. The Bucs lost twice to the Lions last season.
At 7:30 p.m. Dec. 16, the Bucs play their final home game of 2014 against Indianapolis, which is ranked No. 16 in the coaches poll and No. 19 in the media poll, as part of the Cruzin’ Classic hosted by Trip Sports.
