Saturday, May 15, 2004

DELAND, Fla. – After four exhausting rounds, the Barry University men’s golf team concluded the NCAA Division II National Tournament with a third-place finish at the Victoria Hills Golf Club earlier today.

The Buccaneers carded a four-round score of 1201 (305-291-298-307) which was good enough for third out of 18 teams. South Carolina-Aiken finished as the Division II National Champion with a four-round score of 1191 (304-297-292-298), while Chico State finished second overall turning in a four-round score of 1200 (300-297-298-305).

Barry’s Ryan Lamond finished the tournament tied for 10th overall out of 102 individuals turning in a four-round score of 297 (74-73-73-77) to lead the Bucs. Tyler Bale finished tied at 16 (74-75-774-79=302), while Hernan Borja finished tied at 23 (76-71-76-81). James Bowery finished tied at 47 (81-78-79-71) and John Quigley carded a four-round 310 score (83-72-75-80) to round out the Buccaneer squad.

Chico State’s J.J. Jakovac claimed the Division II National Champion Individual Medalist honor turning in a four-round one stroke under par score of 287 (77-70-67-73) for the tournament.

The conclusion of the National Division II National Tournament marks the end of the 2003-04 season for the Barry men, but not without reaching several milestones throughout the year. The Bucs posted their highest ever finish at the Sunshine State Conference Tournament (2nd of 8), they advanced to the NCAA South Region Tournament for only the second time in school history (2nd of 8), and finally advanced to the NCAA National Tournament first the first time in school history (3rd of 18). With many positive accomplishments to build on, the future looks bright for second-year coach Jimmy Stobs and the Barry men’s golf team.
