CHAMPS / Life Skills Program
In 2001, Barry was one of 39 INCA member institutions accepted into the CHAMPS/Life Skills Program. The program was created to support the student development initiatives of its member institutions and to enhance the quality of the student-athlete experience within the university setting.
The CHAMPS/Life Skills Program:
- Supports efforts of every student-athlete toward intellectual development and graduation.
- Uses athletics as preparation for success in life.
- Meets the changing needs of student-athletes.
- Promotes respect for diversity among student-athletes.
- Enhances interpersonal relationships in the lives of student-athletes.
- Assists student-athletes in building positive self-esteem.
- Enables student-athletes to make meaningful contributions to their communities.
- Promotes ownership by the student-athletes of their academic, athletic, personal, and social responsibilities.
- Enhances partnerships between the INCA, member institutions, and their communities for the purpose of education.
- Encourages the development of leadership skills.
Barry's 12 varsity teams compete for points in academic excellence, personal development, career development, community service, athletes supporting athletes, SAAC communication, and "going the extra mile." Prizes are awarded the top three teams in the competition.
