Academic Policies
- Student-athletes are required by the NCAA to be in good standing both academically
and socially with the University and must be making "satisfactory progress" toward
a Baccalaureate degree in order to participate in athletics. This includes the following:
- To participate in intercollegiate athletics as an entering freshman with no previous
full-time college attendance, the student-athlete must be admitted to Barry University
and must meet conference and NCAA eligibility requirements, including certification
by the NCAA initial eligibility clearinghouse both for academics and for amateurism.
These requirements include high school graduation with a minimum cumulative grade-point
average of 2.000 (based on a maximum 4.000) in a successfully completed core curriculum
of at least 14 academic courses (per NCAA Bylaw 14.3.1), and a combined SAT score
of 700 (verbal and math sections) if taken prior to April 1, 1995, or an SAT score
of 820 (if taken on or subsequent to April 1, 1995), or a minimum sum score of 68
on the ACT. These required SAT or ACT scores must be achieved under national testing
conditions on a national testing date. The NCAA Guide to International Academic
Standards for Athletics Eligibility contains the acceptable credentials applicable
to foreign academic records that satisfy the graduation and core-curriculum requirements
for initial eligibility specified in NCAA Bylaw 14.3.
- Prior to each Fall term, undergraduate student-athletes must have a minimum 2.00
cumulative G.P.A. and have successfully completed at least 24 semester hours (12
hours average per term) of academic credits accepted toward a baccalaureate degree
since the beginning of the previous Fall term. Student-athletes having less than
a 2.0 cumulative GPA at the end of the Fall term will be ineligible for practice/competition
during the Spring term. Student-athletes must successfully complete a minimum of
75% or 18 credits of the 24 during the regular academic year (excluding summer terms).
A student-athlete may earn no more than 25%, not to exceed six hours, of credit
in summer sessions to be applied toward satisfactory progress requirements. Remedial,
tutorial, or non-credit courses may not be utilized to satisfy the 24 credit hour
normal progress requirement beyond the student-athlete's first academic year of
college enrollment. In addition, beginning August 1, 2005, you must earn six semester
hours of academic credit the preceding regular academic term in which the student-athlete
has been enrolled full-time at any collegiate institution (Bylaw 14.4.3.1).
- Student-athletes must be currently enrolled in a minimum of 12 credit hours per
term to maintain eligibility status during the season of competition.
- After completing four semesters/six quarters of college enrollment (Rule 14.4.3.1.4),
the student-athlete must declare a major leading toward a degree and must continue
to progress toward that degree.
- Student-athletes are encouraged to carry a 15-16 hour course load each semester.
Completion of 25% of the degree program (30 credit hours) each academic year will
assure progress toward graduation within four years. This also provides the opportunity
to drop a course, if need be, without risking athletic eligibility.
- Student-athletes who are graduate students must be enrolled in a full-time graduate
program as a degree seeking student, be registered for a minimum of 9 graduate credits,
and remain in good academic standing which is a 3.0 cumulative grade point average.
- Student-athletes are expected to attend all classes, even if attendance is not
officially taken by the professor. Participation as a member of an intercollegiate
team already places a hardship on the student-athlete's attendance by necessitating
excused absences for the purpose of competing at scheduled athletic events. Therefore,
student-athletes are expected to attend all classes.
