MIAMI BEACH -- Barry University's Varsity 8+ crew rowed to a second place finish in the three-team Mix of Miami race at Shane Rowing Center on the intracostal Saturday.

Barry's crew of coxswain Gracie Horwitz, stroke Kristina Boncheva, Anna Boada, Beth Desmond, Kelly Harrison, Mandy Carper, Kasia Walentynowicz, Rebekah Kilroy and bow Helene Pierre completed the 4.5-kilometer course in 15:36.45, finishing behind the University of Miami, which posted a 15:20.74 in the headstart competition. Nova Southeastern was third in 16:15.66.

Miami's 4+ unit won its race in 17:40.43. Nova A was second in 19:12.23, while the Sharks B crew was third in 19:47.35. Barry did not race a Varsity 4 crew.

In the 3,750-meter course, Nova's novice 8 boat posted the fastest time in 12:43. Miami's novice 8 boat was second in 15:34.

"I'm happy to get this season started with a good race piece," Buccaneers coach Dave Sanderson said. "We've only been on the water a month so we've got tons of improvement to do, as does every crew at this point. It's just fun to get out on the water and race against good competition."

Barry will compete in the Head of the Hooch Nov. 3-4 in Chattanooga, Tenn.
