Women's Tennis Gets Battle from Mocs in Win

LAKELAND, Fla. -- Barry University women's tennis team had to battle host Florida Southern Saturday in a 6-3 win on the road.

Barry improved to 3-0 overall, 2-0 in the Sunshine State Conference.

Barry's Emma Onila, Akemi Maehama and Karina Goia each won two matches to remain unbeaten this season. Onila beat Christine Nunnemann, 6-0, 6-3, at No. 3 singles. Maehama beat Laura Wichmann, 6-0, 6-1. Goia defeated Victoria Spagnuolo, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 5 singles. 

Onila and Elisabeth Abanda defeated No. 12-ranked Sabine Goge and Magda Riutort, 8-3, at No. 1 doubles. Maehama and Goia beat Crystal Copeland and Wichmann, 8-6, at No. 3 pairs.

Riutort, ranked No. 11 in singles, pushed Abanda to a third-set super tiebreaker before handing the Buccaneers freshman her first loss, 3-6, 6-3, 12-10, at No. 1 singles. Goge, ranked 35th, beat No. 19 Linda Fritschken, 0-6, 6-1, 7-5, in another battle.

Fritschken and Kimmy Twelker defeated Nunnemann and Spagnuolo, 8-1, at No. 2 doubles.

Barry will play at North Florida in Jacksonville Sunday to complete the three-day road swing.
