BOCA RATON, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers split a Sunshine State Conference softball doubleheader with the Lynn Knights at the Lynn Softball Field on Sunday, winning the first game 2-1 and dropping the second 3-0.
The Bucs (25-16, 12-5 SSC) scored twice in the first inning of the first game. Natalia Ojeda scored on an error by Lynn right fielder Cristina Carvatta. Julie Brito delivered an RBI double to score Sara Broeseker.
After the Knights (19-25, 5-12 SSC) scored one in the bottom of the first, Barry’s Alexis Yohe (13-6) only allowed one more hit the rest of the way to earn the complete-game victory. She allowed a run on two hits, walked three and struck out five. Missy Montgomery (8-11) took the loss for Lynn, allowing two runs (one earned) on 10 hits and struck out six.
In the second game, the Knights scored all three runs in the first inning off Barry starter Britney Pugh (5-5), though none were earned. Danille McNeil had an infield single and, after a sacrifice, Devin Kochergen walked. Kaci Vassallo flew out to center, but on Kacey Murray’s ground ball to third, an errant throw allowed McNeil to score and Anne Marie Van Casteren dumped a two-run single into shallow center field.
The Bucs, who stranded 10 runners and had three more out on the bases, had plenty of chances against Murray (11-13), but could not cash them in. Eight of the runners were in scoring position.
Pugh took the loss for the Bucs, giving up three unearned runs on three hits and two walks in two innings. Taylor Sabol, who came on in relief, set down all 11 batters she faced and induced a double play in third with two runners on and one out. Murray scattered seven hits and six walks and struck out six.
The series concludes on Monday at 4:00 pm with a single game.
