Softball Adds Five To Daktronics All-Region Team

PENSACOLA, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers placed five on the 2013 Daktronics All-South Region Softball Team. Senior third baseman Sarah Broeseker, sophomore second baseman Kelly Martinez and junior utility pitcher Britney Pugh made the first team, while senior pitcher Alexis Yohe and freshman outfielder Megan Copeland made the second team.

Broeseker led the Sunshine State Conference with a .415 batting average. She drove in 37 runs and scored 35 more. Her .610 slugging percentage was second in the league, as was her .484 on-base percentage. Broeseker tallied 66 total hits (1st SSC), including 14 doubles (T4th), four triples (T1st) and three homers. Broeseker was particularly effective in conference, hitting .500 with 18 runs and 17 RBI in 24 games to earn conference Player of the Year honors. She walked 13 times, against just six strikeouts, for a .583 on-base percentage and belted seven doubles, three triples and a homer to slug .729.

Martinez was one of the Bucs’ hottest hitters down the stretch, hitting .371 for the season and .523 in the month of April. She scored 25 runs and drove in 31. She was on the team with four homers and 12 stolen bases and was third with 12 doubles. Against conference teams, she hit .431 with three homers and 17 RBI.

Pugh posted a team-best 1.46 ERA, going 7-5 in the circle with two saves. She hit .265 with a pair of homers and 16 RBI in 87 at-bats. She had seven complete games, including an 11-inning marathon win over Tampa, and three shutouts.

Yohe was 20-8 overall with one save and a 1.60 ERA in 184 innings. She struck out 153 and held opponents to a .198 average. She was second in the conference in shutouts with nine and completed 21 of her 29 starts. In conference games, she led the league with a 14-1 record (a .933 winning percentage). She tossed six shutouts, including one-hit efforts against Rollins and Lynn and fired a five-inning perfect game against Florida Tech.

Copeland had an outstanding rookie campaign. She hit .384 with 34 runs scored and swiped 26 of 28 bases attempted. One of the best bunters in the country, she batted .700 on bunt attempts (21 hits in 30 at-bats) and ranked seventh in Division II in sacrifice bunts.
