Women's Basketball Dominates 23rd-Ranked Shaw Bears

DAVIE, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers dominated the 23rd-ranked Shaw Bears 88-69 in the opening game of the NSU Sharks Invitational at Nova Southeastern’s University Center on Monday afternoon.

The Buccaneers (4-3) used a 20-2 run in the first half to blow open the game and the Bears (5-2) never really recovered.

The Bucs led 13-7 after a Shaw jumper by Micah Brooks with 14:05 left in the first period, but the Bucs scored 20 of the next 22 points to go up 33-9 on a Nyjah Porcher layup with 6:50 left. The Bears trimmed the lead to 16 on a Brooks layup at the break, but trailed 44-28. Ashley Lutz, who played 17 minutes after Ines Kerin picked up two quick fouls, scored 10 points.

The teams traded baskets in the second half until a three-point play by Danika Pisconeri put the Bucs up 64-45 with 12:01 to play. The Bears made their run, scoring the next eight points to cut the lead to 11 points, 64-53 on  layup by Kaula Jack with 9:42 remaining.

Tyler Hardy took over for the Bucs, scoring 11 of Barry’s next 15 points, including a three-point play with 4:15 left that pushed the lead back to 18, 79-61. A trey by Kerin and a layup by Pisconeri at the 2:51 mark gave Barry its biggest lead, 86-61, and the Bears did not get the lead under 20 points until a layup by Verdine Warner with 0:02 seconds left.

Hardy, who was held to five points in the first half, finished with a team-high 22 points for the Bucs. Colette Eule added 16 points, six rebounds and five assists. Pisconeri had 13 points and a team-high eight boards. Kerin added 11 points and six assists, while Lutz finished with 10 points. Ariel Hatcher led Shaw with 17 points. Warner had 14 points and 12 rebounds. Jack had 12 points and Brooks added 11.

The Bucs will face the Benedict Tigers on Tuesday at 4:00 pm in the second round.
