WINTER PARK, Florida—The top-seeded Barry Buccaneers made short work of #8 seed Florida Tech 5-0 in the first round of the 2014 Sunshine State Conference Women’s Tennis Tournament on Thursday at the Bert R. Martin Tennis Complex on the campus of Rollins College.
In four of the five completed matches, the Bucs (21-1) lost a total of two games. At the number one doubles flight, the 25th-ranked Buccaneer pair of Kimmy Twelker and Anaeve Pain pulled a mild upset by beating the Panthers’ 15th-ranked pair of Kristina Huba and Natasa Vukovic to complete the doubles sweep.
At number two, Emma Onila and Linda Fritschken, ranked sixth after winning the NCAA Division II doubles title in the fall, shutout Chloe Chanley and Jessica Widmark 8-0, while at number three Karina Goia and Blanka Szavay defeated Merritt Rabson and Katie Close 8-1.
In singles, the Bucs took first sets at five of six flights and led in the other. Christina Valladares made it 4-0 with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Gwendolyn Kauffmann at the fifth flight. Akemi Maehama closed out the match 6-0, 6-0 over Aly Ruschak at number six.
The Bucs now face #4 Rollins, a 5-1 winner over Florida Southern, in the semifinals tomorrow at 12:30 pm.
