MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The #21 Barry Buccaneers powered to a 5-1 win over their arch-rivals, the Lynn Fighting Knights, in Sunshine State Conference women’s soccer play at Buccaneer Field on Tuesday night. The game was delayed 45 minutes due to lightning. It was the third straight game affected by weather for the Bucs and fourth of the season.

The Bucs (4-1-1, 1-0-0 SSC) spotted the Knights (3-5-0, 0-2-0 SSC) a goal in the ninth minute. Lauren Handley passed the ball up the center of the field and Kirstie Schults sprinted past Barry defender Amber Smith who slipped on the wet ground. Schults converted on the breakaway.

The goal stood up until halftime, despite an 18-4 edge in shots for the Bucs. Most came from long range as the Knights bunkered back in to protect the lead. The Bucs missed a golden chance in the 10th minute when Tamara Vuckovich chipped a shot into the box that skipped by Lynn keeper Caitlin Shaver. But the ball bounded off the post and back in to the field.

Barry’s Ashley Harlan kept it a one-goal game in the 37th minute when she headed Jordyn Turner’s shot over the cross bar.

The Bucs scored early and often in the second frame. Just three minutes into the period, Shanice Robe’s shot from the left wing bounced off Shaver and Amanda Traynor was there to tap in the rebound.

Lauren Manna gave the Bucs the lead for good on a penalty shot in the 60th minute. Robe was taken down in the box by the Knights, leading to the penalty.

In the 63rd minute, Rayah Seckler connected from 20 yards out over Shaver’s head. Manna got the assist.

Manna assisted Robe in the 65th minute, slipping a long pass up the left wing. Robe out-ran the defense and converted one-on-one with Shaver.

The Knights pulled their keeper and brought in Katie Nimitz. Laura Rockel tapped in a rebound at the far post for the final goal after Nimitz could not handle a shot from Robe.

Overall, the Bucs held a 38-10 edge in shots, including 15-5 on goal. Becca Rogers picked up the win for the Bucs in goal, making three saves. Shaver had seven saves for the Knights, balanced by the four goals. Nimitz allowed just one goal against three saves.

The Bucs face off against seventh-ranked Rollins on Saturday, Oct. 4 at 7:00 pm.
