MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry softball team opened the 2013 season with a bang, with a doubleheader sweep of Northwood (Fla.) at Buccaneer field on Thursday night. The Bucs took game on 9-0 in five innings and completed the sweep with a 6-0 win in the nightcap.

Ashley Fernandez and Natalia Ojeda each went 3-for-5 and drove in three runs in the doubleheader. Sarah Broeseker also had three hits while Megan Copeland drove in three runs.

In the first game, the Bucs set the tone early as Ojeda led off with a single and went to second on a bunt by Copeland. Broeseker and Julie Brito had back-to-back singles to plate the first run and Fernandez followed with a mammoth three-run homer down the line in left.

The Bucs tacked on two runs in the third on an RBI single by Kayla Monroy and a bases-loaded walk by Ojeda.

In the fifth, the Bucs loaded the bases again with one out and Copeland cleared them with triple to left.

Alexis Yohe, who tossed four hitless innings, picked up the win. She walked one, struck out three and faced the minimum.  Laurrin Howard took the loss in a complete-game effort for the Seahawks.

In game two, the Bucs again rode a big inning to the win. In the second, they sent 11 batters to the plate and scored five runs. Fernandez, who walked to lead off the inning, scored on a ground ball by Alexis Kent. Ojeda had a two-run single, while Camille Czarnecki and Brito each knocked in single runs. The Bucs plated their final run on an RBI single by Kelly Martinez in the third.

Britney Pugh worked the final four innings in relief of Czarnecki and earned the win. Pugh allowed three hits and a walk, but struck out six to preserve the shutout. Czarnecki had five strikeouts in three innings. Kami Reinecke took the loss for the Seahawks, allowing all six runs (two earned) on eight hits and a walk in three innings.
