MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – Third-seeded Lynn beat sixth-seeded Rollins, 5-1, in the NCAA Division II South Region 2 men’s tennis semifinal Monday at Buccaneer Tennis Center.
The Fighting Knights (16-6) advance to play top-seeded Barry (22-2) at 11 a.m. Tuesday for the region title. The winner advances to the NCAA Round of 16 in Altamonte Springs, Fla.
Lynn won two of the three doubles matches, and captured the top three singles flights to move on. Rollins (12-11) won a closely-contested No. 3 doubles match for its lone win.
Lynn’s top doubles team of Danny Riggs and Paolo Volpicelli were 8-5 winners over Jason Alabaster and Ari Davis. The Fighting Knights duo of Vlad Cirla and Pavel Mojha defeated Cooper Maxwell and Jacobo Herrero, 8-5, at No. 2 pairs. The Tars tandem of Robin Marchione and Adrian Di Felice beat Tomas Prokop and Alessio Iannozzi, 8-6, at No. 3. That left the Fighting Knights up 2-1 after pairs play.
Cirla, the 18th-ranked player in the country, notched Lynn’s first singles win as he rolled to a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Malte Christesen, at the top flight. Despite dropping the first set, Prokop, ranked 46th, won a three-set battle with Alabaster at No. 3, 2-6, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 3. That gave the Fighting Knights a 4-1 lead.
Riggs, the 49th-ranked player in the nation, won a battle with the 48th-ranked Marchione, 7-5, 6-4, at No. 2 to send Lynn on to the region championship.
It marks the third time in four years Lynn and Barry will play for the region title.
