Women's Tennis' 6 Unscathed at Panther Invitational

MIAMI, Fla. – Six Barry University women’s tennis players all advanced with singles wins at the Florida International University Panther Invitational Friday.

In the A Draw, Barry’s Sonja Larsen was a 6-2, 7-5 winner over Eastern Michigan's Klara Superjova in her opening-round match in the final fall tournament. Linda Fritschken breezed to a 6-1, 6-0 win over Iryna Serdyuk of Nova Southeastern. Emma Onila won her first match over Eastern Michigan's Daphne Friedrich, 6-3, 6-4.

In the B Draw, Barry’s Ana Pain was an easy 6-0, 6-1 winner over NSU's Carlee Rizzolo. Elisabeth Abanda cruised to a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Nova's Alexandra Johansson. Karina Goia also was victorious, beating Andrea Martinovska of Eastern Michigan, 6-1, 6-3.

In the top doubles bracket, Onila and Fritschken received a first-round bye and then beat Florida Gulf Coast's Elizabeth Means and Sarah Means, 8-4 to reach the championship match. They will be playing for their fourth doubles title of the fall.

In the second tier doubles draw, Barry’s Kimmy Twelker and Pain won their first match over Eastern Michigan's Ani Gogvadze and Maria Paula Ribero, 8-4, before falling in the semifinals, 8-6, to FIU's Carlotta Orlando and Nina Nagode. Larsen and Goia received a first-round bye before falling 8-6 in the semifinals to EMU's Daphne Friedrich and Alejandra Barcelo. They will play for third place 9 a.m. Saturday.

Twelker lost her singles match in the B Bracket to Elizabeth Means, 0-6, 6-3, 7-5. She will compete in the backdraw beginning with Saturday’s 11:30 a.m. match.

Barry’s Jasi Witherspoon begins singles play Saturday. Paired with Abanda in doubles, the Bucs duo beat Nova Southeastern's Charlotte Cote and Bianca Roberts, 8-2.

Action in the final fall tournament of the season continues through Sunday.
