MIAMI SHORES, Fla.-- The third-ranked Barry University has been selected as
the host institution for the 2008 NCAA Division II South Regional Softball
Tournament May 7-11 announced by the NCAA National Office on Thursday.
It will be the fourth time in school history that Barry has been selected
as the host site for the South Regional Softball tournament. The Buccaneers
hosted the first tournament in 1997 and then hosted in back-to-back years in
2002 and 2003.
Barry, the champion of the Sunshine State Conference, is the top seed in the
tournament. Gulf South Conference champs, Alabama-Huntsville, and Albany State
of Georgia, champions of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference,
also received automatic bids and are seeded second and eighth respectively.
The at-large selections, Saint Leo (#3 seed), Tampa (#4), Rollins (#5), Valdosta
State (#6), and West Florida (#7), round out the field.
Play begins on Wednesday, May 7 with four games at Buccaneer Field and runs
through Sunday, May 11 if necessary. The winners of the regional advance to
the finals at the NCAA Division II Spring Sports Festival in Houston, Texas,
May 14-17. The championships consist of an 8-team double elimination tournament.
