MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry women’s basketball team pulled off a 64-60 upset of the 25th-ranked Tampa Spartans in Sunshine State Conference action on Saturday in the Health & Sports Center. The Bucs rallied from 11 points down to force the extra period, and then dominated the Spartans in the bonus frame.

The game was tied 19-19 with 6:12 left in the first period after Alesha Jenkins hit one of two free throws for the Bucs (10-6, 2-5 SSC). But the Spartans closed the period on an 8-5 runs to take a 27-24 lead into the break.

The Spartans (12-4, 3-4 SSC) came out hot and quickly built an 11-point lead after a three-point play by Moriah Hodge with 16:47 remaining. They still led by 11, 49-38, with 8:05 left.

But Barry coach Bill Sullivan put on a full court press that stymied the Spartans and the Bucs trimmed the lead to just one point over the next four minutes. Trailing by two points with 0:11 second left, Dominique Dixon stepped to the line and sank a pair of free throws to knot the game at 55-55.

In the extra frame, the Bucs sprinted out to a six-point lead and held off a late charge by the Spartans.

Colette Eule led the Bucs with a game-high 20 points. Kaley Howard posted her best game of the season with 18 points and nine rebounds off the bench. Dixon and Tyler Hardy each had 11 points and nine boards. Illyssa Vivo led four Spartans in double figures with 15 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Sadie Oyer added 14 points, but fouled out with 0:11 seconds left in regulation to set up Dixon’s tying free throws. Catherine Matthews added 11 points and Hodge had 12.

The Bucs travel to Nova Southeastern on Wednesday, Jan. 30 to take on the Sharks in the Taft Center at 5:30 pm.
