Softball Hammers Out Sweep of Panthers

MELBOURNE, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers stayed within a game of the conference lead with a pair of double-digit shutouts over the Florida Tech Panthers at Nancy Bottge Field on Saturday, taking game one 10-0 in five innings and game two 11-0 in six.

In the first game, Alexis Yohe (15-6) tossed a five-inning perfect game, the first of her career, and struck out seven. The Panthers (25-21, 12-11 SSC) only got one ball out of the infield, a flyout to center by Lindsey Dugan in the fifth.

The Bucs (28-16, 15-5 SSC) tallied early and often against Tech starter Amanda Smith (17-13). In the first inning, Megan Copeland reached on a bunt single with one out and stole second. She scored on a single by Julie Brito.

In the second inning, Sarah Broeseker knocked in Copeland and Fernandez with a two-out single up the middle.

Barry tacked on single runs in the third and fourth off Smith. Kayla Monroy launched a solo homer to left center in the third, while Broeseker drove in Copeland in the fourth with a double.

In the fifth inning, Taylor Smith came on in relief of Amanda Smith and was tagged for five runs of her own. Monroy, Broeseker and Natalia Ojeda had RBI, and the Bucs were aided by three Panther errors.

Amanda Smith took the loss, allowing five runs on 10 hits in four innings. Taylor Smith gave up the other five runs, though none were earned, on five hits in one inning.

In the second game, the Bucs offense continued rolling in an 11-0 win. Monroy got the Bucs on the board in the second inning as her connected for her second home run of the day, a three-run shot to left.

Barry scored three more in the fourth after loading the bases without a hit. Kelly Martinez and Monroy walked and Ojeda was hit by Amanda Smith. Copeland drove in Martinez with an infield single and Broeseker knocked in two more with a base hit up the middle.

In the fifth, Monroy drove in another run with a sacrifice fly, then the Bucs exploded in the sixth off Taylor Smith again. They scored four and sent 10 batters to the plate. Alexis Kent and Britney Pugh each drove in a run and Martinez delivered two RBI.

Pugh (6-5) earned the shutout win, holding the Panthers to three hits and three walks. She struck out five. Amanda Smith took the loss again, surrendering six runs on six hits and two walks in 3.2 innings. Taylor Smith gave up the other five runs on seven hits and two walks in 2.1 innings.

Monroy went 4-for-5 at the plate with two homers, scoring four and driving in six. Copeland was 6-for-8 with five runs scored, while Broeseker went 5-for-7 with a double and also drove in six.

The Lions, who swept Lynn, lead the SSC at 17-4, while Tampa, who swept Nova Southeastern, is 16-5.

The series concludes on Sunday with a single game at 1:00 pm.
