MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers kicked off their 30th anniversary season with a 1-0 win over the Georgia College Bobcats in women’s soccer at Buccaneer Field on Thursday night.

The Bucs (1-0-0) were in defensive control for most of the ball game and held a 16-8 edge in shots (5-4 on goal). But most of the Bobcats’ (0-1-0) shots came from long range and did not present much challenge for Barry keeper Becca Rogers, who had four saves to notch the shutout.

Lavinia Nkomo got the Bucs on the board in the 28th minute. Ashley Harlan fed a ball into the corner for Sara Karna, who faked out the defender and lofted a cross from the right wing, finding Nkomo who headed the ball over 5-5 Bobcat keeper Jessica Catapano for the goal.

Catapano also had four saves for the Bobcats.

The Bucs return to action on Saturday, Sept. 7 at 1:00 pm, hosting the Wolves of West Georgia in another regional matchup.
