MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – Barry University’s baseball team won the first game of a day-night double-header against Alabama-Huntsville, 10-6, Saturday at Feinbloom field before dropping the series finale, 5-1.
Game One
The Buccaneers (5-2) picked up right where they left off on Friday night swinging hot bats early on. Brendan Shaw belted his first homerun of the season when he hit a towering drive over the right-field wall to give the Bucs the 1-0 lead in the first inning.
Alabama-Huntsville (5-2) answered with a run in the top of the second, but the Bucs regained the lead in the bottom of the frame when Carlos Matamoros drove in a pair of runs with a double to left.
Barry continued to increase the lead, scoring one run in the third, two more in the fifth and three in the sixth to push the deficit to 9-1.
Jesse Montalto (1-0) cruised through the first six innings, but ran into a bit of trouble in the top of the seventh. The right-hander scattered ten hits 6.2 innings and allowed five runs of which only three were earned.
A few defensive miscues aided to Montalto’s five runs, but the veteran fought hard and left the game with the Bucs in front with a comfortable lead.
Calvin Rayburn worked two scoreless innings in relief and struck out and Joeanthony Rivera came in to collect the final out of the game to close out the game for the Bucs.
Shaw led the offense in game one with a 3-for-3 performance that included three RBI, a pair of walks and three runs scored.
Adrian English finished 2-for-5 with two RBI’s, hitting in the clean-up spot in the lineup. Sheehan Planas-Arteaga collected three-hits and an RBI in the win as well.
Jacob Croft (1-1) allowed five runs in four innings and was tagged with the loss for the Chargers.
Game Two
Offensively, the Bucs were in full swing heading into the series finale, but like in the series opener, Barry’s bats were held in-check in a 5-1 loss.
Tyler Petsch (0-1) took the mound for his first start of the season, but struggled early on. Despite his struggles, Petsch battled to keep his team in the game, but trailed 5-0 after 3.2 innings of work.
The Buccaneers were held scoreless for the first six innings of the game. It wasn’t until the seventh, when Shaw connected for his second homer in as many games, that the Bucs were able to get on the scoreboard.
Planas was the only Buccaneer with multiple hits in the night-cap and the series ended tied with each team winning two games each.
Joe Iorio and Nate Greve combined for 3.1 innings of scoreless ball in relief.
Drew Eiland (1-0) tossed six innings and held the Bucs silent in route to the win for the Chargers. Blake Massey paced the Chargers’ offense with a pair of homers on the day.
