LAKELAND, Fla. -- Barry University sophomore men's golfer Adam Svensson shot a school record 8-under 64 Monday in the second round of the Matlock Collegiate Classic hosted by Florida Southern to help position him to the top of the leaderboard.

Svensson holds a two-stroke lead entering Tuesday's final round of the 15-team, 75-player field at Lone Palm Golf Club. Svensson's 9-under 36-hole 135 first day on the par-72, 7,065-yard course put him two strokes ahead of Lynn Ernesto Vitienes at the top. It also helped propel the No. 1-ranked Buccaneers within two strokes of tournament-leading Lynn at 7-under 569 as a team. Lynn's 9-under 567 leads the field.

An All-American as a freshman, Svensson had 10 birdies and two bogeys in his record-setting round. Sitting on a 25-foot putt for a crack at 62, the Surrey Vancouver, B.C., native missed the long birdie putt and eventually settled for bogey to cap his round.

Svensson's 64 was a stroke better than a record he and five others established seven times in school history. Daniel Stapff shot 65 twice in 2011. Marcelo Huarte, Marcus Segerstrom, Victor Billskoog and Juan Weissenberg also shared the previous record with Svensson, whose 65 came last season in the third round of the Buccaneer Invitational at Normandy Shores Golf Club in Miami Beach.

Armstrong Atlantic is third at 3-under 573.

Svensson shot 1-under 71 in the opening round of the spring's first tournament. He had six under-par rounds in the fall, and now has eight this season.

Barry senior Jared Dalga shot a 2-under 142, putting together back-to-back 71s to find himself in a tie with West Florida's Juan Miguel Heredia in fifth place. Armstrong's Cory Griffin is third at 5-under 139 and Lynn's Jose Andres fourth at 3-under 141.

Bucs freshman Mario Beltran and sophomore Nico Cavero are tied for 26th at 147 after both shot 74-73. Scott Smyers, who hails from Lakeland and plays the course often, shot 72-77 -- 149, and is tied for 37th.
