TAMPA, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers fell twice on Saturday, 13-7 and 7-3, to the top-ranked Tampa Spartans at the UT Baseball Field.
FIRST GAME
The Spartans scored five runs in the second and four more in the third to coast to a 13-7 win. Tyler Ding went 3-for-3 and Sean O’Brien drove in three runs for the Spartans (28-1, 9-0 SSC).
The Bucs (17-11, 1-8 SSC) mounted a comeback in the late innings, but it fell short. Sheehan Planas-Arteaga went 2-for-4, including a two-run single in the eighth. Luis Rios-Reyes also went 2-for-4 and Tyler Kellmann scored twice.
Joe Iorio (1-2) took the loss in his first start of the season. He allowed five runs (three earned) on eight hits in two innings. David Heintz (5-0) went six scoreless innings, allowing three hits and three walks to get the win.
SECOND GAME
The Bucs jumped out to a 3-0 lead in game two, only to see the Spartans rally for seven unanswered runs for the win.
JC Cardenas had an RBI double in the first inning for the Bucs. Kellmann scored on a groundout by Mike Diaz in the second and Planas-Arteaga knocked in Carlos Matamoros with a single in the third.
After scoring once in the third, the Spartans took a 5-3 lead with four runs in the fourth. Nick Tindall led off with a home run and Giovanny Alfonso had a two-run single. Tampa added two insurance runs in the sixth.
Billy Atkins (2-3) took the loss for the Bucs. He surrendered five runs on six hits and two walks in three innings. Michael Calkins (4-0) earned the win in relief for the Spartans. He worked 2.1 scoreless innings, allowing a hit and two walks. Kevin McNorton went the last 1.2 innings for his fifth save.
The Bucs play at St. Thomas on Tuesday, Mar. 25 before returning home to host the Rollins Tars on the weekend.
