Men's Tennis: Dreer Unbeaten at Varner Invitational

WINTER PARK, Fla. – Barry University men’s tennis player Nico Dreer won two matches against NCAA Division I opponents Friday at the Varner Invitational at Rollins College.

Dreer beat Stetson’s Simon Julin, 6-0, 6-3, in the opening round of the Flight A singles bracket. He and Franco Echenique defeated Bethune-Cookman’s Diego Garavito and Greg Almeida, 8-1, in the Flight B doubles bracket.

Barry’s Fabian Pronnet was a 6-2, 6-0 winner over Saint Leo’s Ego Panyushkin in the A singles flight. Pronnet and Renato Lombardi lost to Simon Julin and Laie Blanco of Stetson, 8-4, in the A doubles.

In the B singles flight, Lombardi beat Lynn’s Zdenek Seveik, 6-1, 6-1. Echenique fell 6-1, 6-1 to Central Florida’s Chris Barrus.

In the C singles bracket, Barry’s Austin Cruz lost to Troy’s Pablo Moreno, 7-5, 6-2.

Cruz and Ajdin Tahirovic beat Stetson’s Chester Espie and Laurynas Antropikas, 8-6, in the B doubles draw.

Tahirovic’s singles match against Bethune-Cookman’s Alvaro Barrero was suspended by rain with Tahirovic leading 5-4 in the first set.

The tournament continues through Sunday.
