MIAMI SHORES, Fla.-- Nico Gercke has continued to add to a distinguished season and career at Barry by being named to the Capital One Academic All-America Second Team.

The senior midfielder led the team with eight goals this year, including four against Florida Southern on his Senior Night.

He also had a 4.0 GPA in business management, making him a star on and off the field. 

This is the third honor on the year for Gercke, who has also been named to the All-SSC Second Team and the CoSIDA Academic All-Region Team for his academic and athletic excellence. 

In his time at Barry, Gercke scored 13 goals and had five assists for the Bucs.

He is the third Buccaneer to be named an Academic All-American and the first since Mark Anderson in 2011.

The 11-member second team includes Saint Leo University’s Manuel Schoenhuber, Javier Gallardo of New York Institute of Technology, Dane Nielson and Shane Panther of California State University, Los Angeles, Drury’s Mike Lee, Barry University’s Nico Gerke, James Roberts of the University of Colorado Colorado Springs, and Barton College’s Erik Pajunk.
