DECATUR, Ala.—The Barry Buccanneers took a pair of wins to open the 2013 Charger Chillout at Wilson Morgan Park on Friday. The Bucs won 5-3 over Bellarmine and 2-1 over Augusta State.
In the first game, Barry survived a strong challenge from the Knights. The Bucs (5-4) led 3-1 in the sixth when Scarlett Powers launched a two-run homer to center field to knot the game at 3-3.
In the top of the seventh, though, the Bucs strung together four hits and a sacrifice bunt to plate a pair of runs and Alexis Yohe (2-1) made them stand up in the bottom of the inning by retiring the Knights in order.
Yohe struck out a career-high 13 and scattered seven hits in a complete game. Tanner Tevis (0-1) took the loss for Bellarmine. She allowed five runs (four earned) on 12 hits and struck out three.
Sarah Broeseker, who had two hits, and Julie Brito, who had three, got the seventh-inning rally started with a pair of hits.
In the second game, Barry got an RBI double from Brito in the first and another from Broeseker in the third to build a 2-0 lead. The Jaguars (0-7) came back with a run the fourth off Barry starter Camille Czarnecki (2-2).
Taylor Sabol came in to work the final three innings for the Bucs, holding the Jags scoreless on two hits and struck out one. Czarnecki earned the win with a run on four hits and three walks in four innings. Hayley Birkle took the loss for the Jags, allowing two runs on three hits and two walks in six innings.
The Bucs will face the host Alabama-Huntsville Chargers and the Saints of North Georgia on Saturday.
