WINTER PARK, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers got back on the winning track with an impressive pair of South Region softball wins over the Fort Valley State Wildcats, 14-4 in five innings and 8-0 in six innings at Lake Island Park in Winter Park, Fla., on Saturday.
In game one, the Bucs (7-5) blasted four homers in the first two innings to break the game open. The four homers tie the school record set in six other games.
In the first inning, Julie Brito and Britney Pugh went back-to-back to give the Bucs a 3-0 lead. In the second inning, Sarah Broeseker hit a grand slam and Kayla Monroy added a three-run shot to power a nine-run inning. Barry went on to the 14-4 win.
Camille Czarnecki (3-2) earned the win. She struck out 11 in five innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on three hits and three walks. Kierra Johnson (2-5) took the loss for the Wildcats.
In game two, Pugh (1-1) pitched a shutout and drove in the ending run in the sixth inning. She held the Wildcats (2-10) to three hits and two walks and struck out nine.
Brito led the Bucs with four hits in the doubleheader. Natalia Ojeda scored four runs and Broeseker drove in six.
The Bucs play two games at the Saint Leo Invitational on Sunday, facing Maryville (Mo.) and Francis Marion.
