HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers picked up right where they left off after the first round of the NCAA South/Southeast Super Regional Men’s Golf Tournament. After winning their first-ever Sunshine State Conference tournament in April, the Bucs find themselves on top of the regional field after the first round, after firing a 284 (-4) on Monday.

“The guys played a good, solid round,” Buccaneer head coach Jimmy Stobs said. “There are some tricky holes where you have to be really focused and, except for a few mistakes, they did a good job with that today.”

The Bucs (-4) sit three strokes ahead of defending national champs, Nova Southeastern (-1). Fellow SSC member Lynn is in third place at even par. Georgia College (+3) and Florida Southern (+5) round out the top five.

Freshman Adam Svensson and junior Scott Smyers led the Bucs with two-under-par 70 rounds. The pair is currently tied for second. Senior Marcus Segerstrom is one stroke back at 71, while senior Simon Forslund shot 73 and junior Jared Dalga fired a 77.

NSU’s Richard Celia carded a 69 on the first round for the individual lead. Joining Smyers and Svensson in the logjam at second are Matt Atkins of South Carolina-Aiken and Ben Taylor of Nova Southeastern.

The tournament continues tomorrow and concludes on Wednesday. The top seven teams advance to the NCAA Division II National Tournament at Hershey Country Club in Hershey, Pa., May 19-24.
