KEY LARGO, Fla. -- Barry University's rowing crew volunteered in a Breakaway to Key Largo bike ride to support Multiple Sclerosis Saturday.
The 100-mile bike ride covered a route from Florida International University Modesto Maidique campus to Key Largo.
The Buccaneers volunteered to support the cause and raise funds to battle Multiple Sclerosis. The mother of Barry rower Samantha McKenzie, Kelly McKenzie, was diagnosed with agressive Multiple Sclerosis in August 2012.
"The bike MS breakaway to Key Largo was a special event for me," Samantha McKenzie said. "She has run through medicine after medicine with no good results yielded so far. Being able to volunteer with my teammates and coaches, while having a friend ride to fundraise for research meant a lot to me. It proved that I have a great support group, and that the best way to fight something is to do it together.
"At the finish line of the event, when I saw so many people rallied together for the same cause and finishing the 100-mile bike ride was inspiring. People were sharing personal experiences and bonding over such an athletic accomplishment. I can’t thank everyone enough for the effort they put into the event and share with them how grateful I am for their support."
