Rowing: Varsity 8 Wins 1st Event at San Diego Crew Classic

SAN DIEGO – Barry University’s Varsity 8+ won its first race at the San Diego Crew Classic Saturday.

The No. 2-ranked Buccaneers boat of coxswain Angela Dasch, stroke Beth Desmond, Kristina Boncheva, Sam McKenzie, Lun Ugrenovic, Jelena Momirov, Paola Girotto, Anais Foppoli and bow Mandy Carper won the Women’s Division II/Division III/Club A race with a time of 7:16.4. The Bucs outraced No. 5 UC-San Diego’s A crew (7:21.9) and Wichita State (7:22.0) in its first West Coast race since the 2011 NCAA Championships in Gold River, Calif.

Barry’s Varsity 4 of cox Stephanie Dinkel, stroke Ellie Hartmann, Rebekah Kilroy, Lulu Mariscal and bow Spiadgie Anthony finished third in its eight-boat race. The Buccaneers crossed the finish line in 4:09.82. UCSD was first in 3:59.25, and Central Oklahoma was the runner-up in 4:08.76.

The regatta continues Sunday at Crown Point Park.
