Men's Golf Holds Lead at SSC Championships

DADE CITY, Fla. -- Barry University’s No. 1-ranked men’s golf team leads after two rounds of the Sunshine State Conference Championships.

The Buccaneers shot 277 in Monday’s second round to take a 10-stroke lead over Saint Leo entering the final round. The Bucs are at 17-under 559 through 36 holes. Lynn is third at 1-under 575 in the nine-team tournament.

Barry’s Adam Svensson shot 2-under 70 for the second straight day, and has a one-stroke lead over teammates Mario Beltran and Berry Jole and Saint Leo’s Joey Savoie, who are all tied for second at 3-under 141. Barry’s Jared Dalga is in five-way tie for fifth at 2-under 142.

Beltran fired a 4-under 68 Tuesday, stringing four straight birdies together in a round highlighted by six birdies to offset two bogeys. He birdied four par-4s and two par-5s. Svensson had five birdies and three bogeys. Jole had three birdies and four bogeys.

Dalga shot 71 for the second straight day behind five birdies, two bogeys and a double-bogey. Barry’s Scott Smyers had two birdies and an eagle in a bogey-free second round for a 4-under 68. Smyers is tied for 14th at 1-over 145 in the 45-player field.

Smyers eagled the par-5, 534-yard ninth to cap his round. The men teed off on the back nine.

Tee times begin at 8:30 a.m. in Tuesday's final round.
