MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—Danny Wheelan joins the Barry University women’s soccer team as the full-time assistant coach this fall after spending the last two years as the graduate assistant at Bloomsburg University in Pennsylvania, according to director of athletics Michael L. Covone.

A native of Edinburgh, Scotland, Wheelan was a member of the Scotland Schoolboys Under 18 National team before coming to the US to play collegiate soccer in 2003.

Wheelan was a four-year starter and two-year captain at NCAA Division I Loyola University-Maryland where he garnered all-conference honors and was a member of two MAAC regular season title winning sides.  After graduation, he returned to Scotland where he played semi-professionally and began his coaching career.

Wheelan has coached at camps in the US as well as at the high school and youth level in Edinburgh.  He currently holds the NSCAA Advanced National and National Diplomas as well as coaching diplomas from the Scottish Football Association for Kids Level 1,2,3, Youth Level 1,2,3, Goalkeeping Level 1, and a special topics diploma in Coaching Footballers with Disabilities.

While at Loyola, he graduated with a degree in International Business and is currently pursuing his Master of Business Administration degree from Bloomsburg University.

Wheelan joins the defending Sunshine State Conference champs after the Buccaneers went 12-4-3 last season and 7-0-1 in the SSC to finish first for the seventh time in program history, most in the conference. The Bucs return eight starters, including the entire back line headed by SSC Defensive Player of the Year Becca Rogers in goal. The Bucs led the SSC in goals against average.
