Buccaneer Field

Buccaneer Field, where the Barry University women’s soccer team has achieved a 153-18-10 (.872) record over 23 seasons, is one of the top soccer facilities in collegiate athletics.

A state-of-the-art soccer training facility, Buccaneer Field also added lights in 2000. The outdoor training center features two 120 x 78-yard fields, a two-story press box/concession stand with photo deck, and seating for 1,500 fans. A brand-new scoreboard was installed prior to the 2006 season. The playing surface is well-groomed Bermuda grass.

In 1999, Buccaneer Field was the first site in NCAA history to host both of the men’s and women’s Division II championship tournaments simultaneously. In 2000, the NCAA brought both tournaments back to the Miami Shores for the second straight year.

In all, Buccaneer Field has hosted five NCAA Division II Women’s Soccer Final Fours, including 1989 and 1993, when Barry won two of its three national titles, and two NCAA Division II Men’s Final Fours. Barry’s women’s team built a 23-game home winning streak at Buccaneer Field, stretching from 1991-1993.

The women’s soccer team has recorded eight undefeated, untied seasons at Buccaneer Field, including all three national championship seasons. In addition to the championship years of 1989 (7-0), 1992 (7-0), and 1993 (9-0), the Buccaneers posted undefeated records in 1987 (7-0), 1991 (7-0), 1995 (7-0), 1998 (8-0) and 2005 (5-0).

Barry has ended its home schedule seven other times with just one loss or one tie, and the Bucs have never lost more than two home matches in one season.

It’s not surprising that Buccaneer Field has been used as a practice facility for many teams touring South Florida. In 1996, Barry’s soccer complex served as the training headquarters for the Brazilian Men’s Olympic Team. In 1998, both the USA Men’s National Team and the Brazilian Men’s National Team trained at Barry’s soccer complex prior to the World Cup. In 2000, the New York/New Jersey Metro Stars and the San Jose Earthquake conducted their preseason training there.

During the annual FedEx Orange Bowl, Buccaneer Field is converted into a football field and used as a practice site. In recent years, Notre Dame, Tennessee, Syracuse, Michigan, Oklahoma, Maryland, Penn State and Iowa have all used the outstanding facilities at Buccaneer Field.
